What Is a Band Banner or Backdrop?
A band banner is a custom-printed graphic displayed behind, beside, or in front of performers. It can feature a band logo, album artwork, sponsor branding, tour information or a completely bespoke design.
Smaller banners may be fixed to barriers, speaker stacks or the front of a stage. Larger stage backdrops are normally suspended behind the performers to create a highly visible background for the audience, photographs and video recordings.
How Big Should a Band Banner Be?
The best size depends on the venues in which the band normally performs and where the banner will be installed. Before ordering, check the available stage width and height and ask the venue whether it has suitable hanging points.
A backdrop measuring around 2.5m × 2.5m can work well in many smaller venues. Larger stages and festivals may require a much wider banner to remain visible behind the performers and equipment. If the available height is limited, some lightweight fabric can usually drape safely onto the stage floor.
Venues may also specify particular finishing or fire-rating requirements. Confirm these details before placing an order, especially when the backdrop will be used in theatres, large concert halls or festival structures.
What Is the Best Material for a Band Banner?
For most indoor performances and touring bands, we recommend a lightweight polyester fabric. It produces vibrant colours, has a non-reflective surface and packs into a relatively small space for transportation.
The best option depends on where the banner will be used, how often it will travel, and whether it needs to withstand outdoor conditions.
210gsm Polyester Band Banners
210gsm polyester is one of our most popular materials for band backdrops. It is printed using a dye-sublimation process, which produces deep, vibrant colours on a low-reflection fabric surface.
The material hangs well, can be folded for transportation and is easier to handle than a comparable PVC banner. These qualities make it particularly suitable for touring bands, concert venues and indoor stage productions.
115gsm Lightweight Polyester
115gsm polyester offers a lighter alternative when low weight and compact storage are priorities. It is suitable for larger displays where a heavier fabric is unnecessary.
AirMesh Fabric
AirMesh is a lightweight perforated fabric that allows air and sound to pass through. Its acoustically transparent construction makes it useful for covering speaker stacks and for selected stage installations.
Blackback Fabric
Blackback Pro includes a light-blocking backing. This helps prevent lighting, structures or other objects behind the graphic from showing through and is useful where greater opacity is required.
PVC Band Banners
PVC banner material provides a waterproof and easy-to-clean option for indoor or outdoor use. It is suitable for smaller stage banners, front-of-stage displays and installations where a robust material is needed.
PVC is heavier and more reflective than polyester. It should normally be rolled rather than folded because folding can create visible creases that are difficult to remove. Always check the relevant fire rating when comparing PVC products from different suppliers.
PVC Mesh Band Banners
PVC mesh contains small perforations that allow some wind to pass through the material. It can be suitable for larger outdoor stage banners, festival installations and exposed locations where reducing wind loading is important.
Mesh banners must still be securely installed on a suitable structure by a competent person. Always follow venue and event safety requirements.
How Should a Band Backdrop Be Finished?
The correct finishing specification depends on how the banner will be installed. If possible, ask the venue or stage manager about available hanging points before ordering.
Hems
Hemmed edges add strength and help prevent damage or fraying. PVC banner hems are welded, while fabric backdrops are normally stitched.
Eyelets
Eyelets provide attachment points for suitable clips, ties, ropes or bungee cord. They can be added across the top or around multiple edges, depending on installation requirements.
Pole Pockets
Pole pockets, also known as sleeves, allow a pole, bar or weighted rod to pass through an edge of the banner. A pocket along the bottom can help tension a hanging backdrop and reduce movement.
Do I Need a Backdrop Stand?
A portable stand is useful when a venue does not provide suitable hanging points. Our standard backdrop stand can display a graphic up to approximately 8ft × 8ft and can be transported between smaller venues.
Always check that the available floor space is sufficient and that the stand can be positioned safely without obstructing performers, equipment, exits or audience areas.
How Should I Prepare the Artwork?
Create band backdrop artwork in the correct proportions and supply it at sufficient resolution for the finished size. Logos and text are best provided as vector artwork where possible, while photographs should be high resolution.
Remember that parts of the backdrop may be hidden by performers, drums, amplifiers or stage equipment. Keep the most important logo or wording large, clear and positioned where it will remain visible.
Dark designs can work well under stage lighting, but contrast is essential. Avoid placing dark text over a dark background or using very fine details that may disappear when viewed from the audience.

Choosing the Right Band Backdrop
